Conversation lengths on other dating apps are notoriously short. According to one study: "39% of conversations consist of only one message, [and] a further 10% contain two or more messages that are unreciprocated" (1). We wanted to change this, so we built Glimpse. We intentionally used gamification and app mechanisms to make a dating app that incentivizes conversation. Here's how it worked:

Like Tinder, Bumble, or other swipe dating apps users swipe through profiles of potential matches. They designate which ones they are interested in. Similar to these apps, a match is made if two people are mutually interested in each other.

This is where Glimpse is different. When the match appears, it appears with the match's name and photos hidden. You know you're attracted to them because you swiped on them earlier, but you don't know which person it is. You still have access to their bio and written information to start a conversation.

To unlock your match's photos and see which amazing person from earlier it is that you matched with you must exchange 20 messages.

Additional features such as limited mailbox size and others were also included in the design but the "semi-blind" dating described above was the key concept.

Results

Glimpse was eventually shut down as part of my team and I returned to school but not until after our design hypothesis was proven. Below are two comparison points between Glimpse, Tinder, and OkCupid (two of the biggest dating apps) in which you can clearly see that our app mechanisms were successfully increasing conversation lengths significantly beyond either of the two other apps.

As the results show across two separate user cohorts, the percentage of conversations that get passed 5 messages and those that last beyond 15 messages is far higher with Glimpse than Tinder.
